One of the most rewarding aspects of leading the Digital Infrastructure & Security Operations (DISO) team within the Ministry of Justice is witnessing the energy and fresh thinking that new joiners bring. This year, we welcomed another brilliant cohort of interns, apprentices, and Civil Service Fast Streamers. They arrived with curiosity, drive, and a sense of purpose and I couldn’t be more grateful for the impact they are already making.
Over the past four years, our team has consistently embraced early talent programmes, and the results speak for themselves.
Who We Are and Why Fresh Thinking Matters
DISO underpins the digital infrastructure that keeps the Ministry of Justice running from secure networks and cloud hosting to cyber defence and video platforms for courts and prisons. Whether it’s rolling out new WiFi in probation offices or ensuring secure access to data, we enable MoJ colleagues to deliver services seamlessly and safely.
It is complex and critical work. But it’s also deeply human. To do it well, we need people who challenge assumptions, ask bold questions, and approach problems in new ways.
Diversity, Defined Differently
For me, diversity means thinking differently. Yes, it is about representation and fairness but it’s also about encouraging varied approaches to problem-solving. It’s about amplifying voices that don’t always sound like our own and building teams that thrive because of their differences. That’s why our early talent programmes matter so much.
Summer Internship Programme (SIP)
The SIP offers undergraduates a meaningful glimpse into Civil Service careers through two-month placements, with a focus on regional opportunities and STEM backgrounds aligning with MoJ’s Places for Growth goals.
Our SIP interns are already making an impact.
As a member within our team highlighted, “The intern we had was fantastic, quick to learn and genuinely interested in everything we did. It made me reflect on things I hadn’t considered before and brought fresh challenges in a really positive way.”
Interns who complete the SIP and meet agreed outcomes with their line managers may also gain a fast pass to the Civil Service Fast Stream programme.
Autism Exchange Internship Programme (AEIP)
This programme is close to my heart. AEIP helps young autistic people gain work experience in a supportive environment. This year, placements were extended to eight weeks to deepen their impact.
As someone who co-founded a charity supporting parents of autistic children, I’ve seen firsthand the superpowers neurodivergent individuals bring exceptional focus, pattern recognition, creative thinking, and honest communication. When we support neurodiverse colleagues well, everyone benefits.
“It has been an amazing experience. Thanks to the team for all the opportunities, advice, and kindness.”- Adam, former AEIP intern
DISO has proudly hosted AEIP interns for several years, and we are exploring ways to go even further.
Civil Service Fast Stream: Building Future Leaders
The Fast Stream develops future leaders through diverse postings, big responsibilities, and deep learning. Many Fast Streamers have rotated through DISO, bringing strategic, systems-level thinking to our work.
What is especially encouraging is that many have chosen to stay, taking on full-time roles and growing their careers with us. That speaks volumes about both the calibre of talent and the culture we are building.
What Early Talent Brings
Across SIP, AEIP, apprenticeships, and the Fast Stream, our early talent has:
- Reimagined services and identified new delivery opportunities
- Contributed to product planning and service design
- Asked bold questions and offered fresh perspectives
- Genuinely improved how we work
They have made us a better team not just more capable, but more reflective, inclusive, and open to change.
Looking Ahead
As a leader, I believe in challenging with courage, listening with intent, and leaving people and systems stronger than before. That is why early talent and the diversity of thought they bring isn’t just important to DISO. It’s essential.
As we continue to invest in early talent and embrace diverse thinking, we are shaping a more inclusive, innovative future for public service.
To everyone who has joined us, thank you. You have already made your mark.
To those considering a future in government tech: there is space for you.
